What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom dental restorations used to repair rear teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay, fractures, or large failing dental fillings. These restorations are ideal when the damage is too extensive for a simple filling, but not severe enough to require full dental crowns. This type of dental restoration helps preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible while strengthening what remains.

The Inlay and Onlay Procedure

During your first visit, your dentist will numb the area and gently remove any decayed or damaged part of the tooth. Once the tooth is clean and prepared, an impression is taken using either dental putty or a digital scanner to ensure an accurate fit. A temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth while your custom inlay or onlay is being created. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory, where your restoration will be crafted from porcelain, composite resin, or gold.

At your second appointment, the temporary filling is carefully removed. Your dentist will then check the inlay or onlay for an accurate fit and ensure it feels comfortable in your bite. Once approved, the restoration is permanently bonded to the prepared tooth using a high-strength dental resin. Finally, the inlay or onlay is polished to deliver a smooth, natural-looking finish.
